With growing momentum on the national level to address the disproportionate and inequitable health and environmental burdens on low income Black and brown communities, now is an exciting time to contribute to grassroots efforts supporting environmental justice communities!

Position Description:

The DC Environmental Justice Coalition Coordinator will work with the coalition’s co-conveners (Empower DC, Coalition for Environmentally Safe Communities and Near Buzzard Point Resilient Action Committee) and its members to carry out activities that grow the coalition, build on its priorities, and advance the goal of furthering environmental justice in DC. The Coalition was formed in mid-2021 and this position will play a central role in growing and developing the Coalition and laying the groundwork for long term efforts to bring about systemic change. The DC Environmental Justice Coalition is part of the Mid-Atlantic EJ Coalition and meets regularly with counterparts in MD, VA and DE. The effort is supported by the international environmental justice organization Namati.

Position Duties:

Coalition Development

  • Lead activities to grow the membership and engagement of impacted residents and organizations, such as outreach, one-on-ones, and attending relevant community meetings and events
  • Support the development and implementation of coalitions structures for membership and decision making
  • Coordinate coalition meetings including preparing for, facilitating and providing follow up with notes and assignments
  • Prepare materials that support the work of the coalition for distribution in the community and online

Policy Development

  • Enhance the Coalition’s efforts to uplift a policy agenda by engaging in research and policy analysis to identify models from other jurisdictions, draft language and develop policy recommendations
  • Coordinate meetings and engagement with DC agencies and elected officials that informs and builds support for policy goals
  • Engage with other organizations to share information about policy goals and seek their support

Administrative & Communications

  • Manage the shared files of the Coalition, maintain contact database, and support the management of coalition budget
  • Manage logistics for online and in-person meetings and events
  • Develop updates, press releases, fact sheets, social media posts and other materials to that communicate the Coalition’s work
  • Assist with grants and grant reports as needed


Must be local to Washington, DC and able to travel throughout the city. Position will be based at Empower DC’s Ivy City Clubhouse with a hybrid schedule of at least 2 days per week in office.  


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Effectively able to use Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel), as well as Google docs, Doodle, Canva, Zoom, and other commonly used tools
  • Base level knowledge of Environmental Justice and policy and ability to learn new information quickly, and effectively communicate information to grassroots audiences
  • Able to work independently and manage time effectively
  • Familiarity with DC and its communities, organizations and government
  • Ability to travel throughout the District using personal vehicle or public transportation Fluency in the Spanish or Amharic is not required but would be beneficial

Compensation & Benefits:

Payments will be made bi-weekly via direct deposit. All program related travel expenses will be paid. Possibility of contract extension based on funding and performance.
