Racial Equity

What does Racial Equity mean to you? What will it take to get there?

Racial Equity is repairing the harm done to those impacted by racism across generations, and ensuring that access to money, land, power and other assets of society are balanced. Racial equity is achieved when Black Americans, and other non-white ethnic groups, enjoy the same quality of life as White Americans - evidenced by measurable improvements in income level, health, life expectancy, educational attainment, employment and other factors.

In 2019, Empower DC interviewed 750 people on the streets of DC to get their views on what racial equity means and what it will take to get there. We are channeling that input into efforts to strengthen the Racial Equity Achieves Results Act (REAR Act), introduced by Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie earlier this year, to make sure that the bill has a real impact.
