Racial Equity Symposium

We are excited to be working with our partners at American University Washington College of Law to bring you a symposium featuring national experts who will provide insight to inform DC's advancement of racial equity analysis within city planning and zoning.

Due to the efforts of Empower DC and our partners, the DC Council included provisions in the amended Comprehensive Plan approved in May 2021 requiring that a "racial equity lens" be applied to planning and zoning, with the development of tools and processes to evaluate the racial equity impact of zoning decisions.

Subsequently, the DC Zoning Commission released its draft racial equity analysis tool, held a public roundtable, and has now released its second draft of the now expanded racial equity analysis tool. Applicants for zoning approval must now incorporate the required analysis outlined in the tool in their proposals. We look forward to hearing from experts in the field who have experience with similar measures in other cities in order to inform our city's effective implementation of racial equity requirements.

We will hear from:

Dr. Lance Freeman

Professor of City & Regional Planning

 Marlon Brown

Equity & Social Justice Practitioner

 Senator Lydia Edwards

Massachusetts State Senator
