Empower DC and Namati are hosting a town hall on September 21st 7:00 pm at Trinity Baptist Church 1814 Central PL NE, concerning National Engineering Products (NEP) and its adverse health and environmental impacts on the Ivy City community. Our goal is to reach out to community leaders such as yourself and come up with solutions to this problem.
For more than half a century, NEP has operated its chemical plant in Ivy City, DC. The facility manufactures industrial-grade sealants for the military using chemicals such as cresol, which has a burning-tar odor, and formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen.
NEP operates without an air quality permit because its operations predate DC’s air pollution laws. DC's environmental agency has never issued a permit, nor attempted to control emissions or odors. A Certificate of Occupancy issued to NEP in 1971 predates DC zoning laws prohibiting industrial development within 100 feet of a residence. Under DC law, these types of industrial sites may continue to operate under their old licenses.
