Join one of DC’s most fierce and effective community organizing groups! Empower DC is a citywide, grassroots, membership-based organizing project working to build the confident self-advocacy and organized political power of low- and moderate-income DC residents to address racial, economic, and environmental justice through systemic change. 

The organization was founded in 2003 and since that time has engaged a multi-generational and multi-ethnic membership base in neighborhood-specific and citywide campaigns addressing issues of affordable housing, childcare, education, public land, community development and environmental justice. Empower DC is known for taking on tough issues and engaging in long-term battles in support of some of the lowest income communities in DC.  At the center of our organizing model are directly impacted grassroots leaders who influence the goals and strategies we employ in our efforts. 


Provide administrative support to the Executive Director & staff to increase productivity, support the organization's growth and keep things running smoothly.

Position Duties:

Calendar & Email Management

  • Be the gatekeeper of the Executive Director’s busy calendar, ensuring that their time is used for high priority meetings only and sending other meeting or speaking requests to the proper staff.
  • Ensure that the ED is aware of upcoming meetings, presentations, and deadlines.
  • Manage the ED’s Outlook email using flags, rules, color coding, etc. to create a system for following up.
  • Respond to incoming emails on behalf of the ED in a timely manner.

Organizational Support

  • Open mail and prepare checks for deposit.
  • Order and maintain office supplies & promotional materials, ensuring that they are orderly and easily accessible.
  • Provide support for virtual & in-person events, overseeing logistics, registration, setup, email blasts, etc.
  • Coordinate physical mailings for members without email access, fundraisers, and annual meetings.
  • Use Canva to create graphics for upcoming events, fundraisers & presentations.

Data Management

  • Maintain the CRM database (NationBuilder) including timely entry of new contacts, coding contacts to facilitate follow-up, maintaining an active press list, and creating/maintaining segmented lists for fundraising appeals and other mailings.
  • Maintain the filing system in Microsoft SharePoint and GoogleDrive. 
  • Digitally archive our work.

Other duties as assigned.


  • 2+ years of demonstrated success in nonprofit administrative support.
  • Commitment to social, economic, and racial justice, including the ability to work effectively with people of all backgrounds and identities.
  • Superb organization and detail-oriented, including the ability to manage the Executive Director’s complex schedule, work both independently and with a team, manage competing priorities and remain calm in high-pressure situations.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to problem solve and handle high stress situations with finesse.
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or commensurate experience.
  • Proficiency (or ability to quickly develop proficiency) with Outlook, SharePoint, CRM databases (NationBuilder), and Canva.

Compensation & Benefits:

This is a full-time, exempt level position, eligible for full benefits. Empower DC covers 100% of the costs of health, dental and vision insurance. Empower DC annually contributes 2.5% of each full-time employee’s salary to a retirement benefit plan. Employees accrue 10 days of vacation leave, 10 days sick leave, two personal days and all federal holidays. Our office also closes between Christmas and New Year’s. After each five-year anniversary with Empower DC, an employee is entitled to one month of paid leave as a thank you for long-time service, and as a time to refresh and rejuvenate. During the pandemic employees also receive a monthly $100 telework stipend.
