Anthropologist/Activist

Sabiyha Prince is an anthropologist/activist, and visual artist whose pushback against inequality is reflected in her writings and artistic practice.  Author of the ethnographies Constructing Belonging and African Americans and Gentrification in Washington, DC, Sabiyha also edited Capital Dilemma with Derek Hyra.  As an organizer she coordinated Congressional hearings on Namibian independence, the celebrity tour to 'cancer alley' and anti war actions with Black Voices for Peace  Sabiyha's paintings and digital collages have been exhibited at The Anacostia Arts Center, The Art League, The Hill Center, Zenith Gallery, 11Eleven Gallery and through Black Girls Who Paint and The Petworth Artist’s Collaborative. Media appearances include MSNBC, NPR, Al Jazeera English, Sirius XM, WHUR, WOL, WPFW, and WYPR.

Pastor of The Ambassador Baptist Church

Rev. Wanda Thompson serves as the Pastor of The Ambassador Baptist Church where she has been a member since 1976. She is a native Washingtonian. She grew up in Ward 7 and has been a 37 year resident of the Fairlawn community. She received her Master of Divinity degree from Howard University School of Divinity in 1996. Rev. Thompson received her Bachelor's degree in psychology from Dickinson College and her Master's degree and Ph.D. from Temple University in Clinical Psychology and is licensed as a psychologist in both DC and Maryland. She has also completed certificate classes in leadership development; business; and public advocacy. Rev. Thompson is active in several community organizations, including the Wednesday Morning Clergy, Sister Clergy group and Ward 8 Food Pantry Collaborative. She has conducted trainings; participated in advocacy efforts; and, has testified before the DC Council on many issues. She truly believes in serving the community and in advocated against displacement of Black residents from the city.

Treasurer Laura Fuchs moved to DC and began teaching in Ward 7 at HD Woodson HS in 2007. As Michelle Rhee began closing schools she got involved with Empower DC because they were taking direct action to confront the Mayor and fight back against the closures. After that she began attending regular Empower DC meetings and volunteering on campaigns. Serving on the Board has been a great collaborative experience and Laura is glad she can give back in a small way to an organization that does so much good in DC.

Partnerships Manager at the DC Primary Care Association

David Poms has been an Empower DC member since 2013 and was on the steering committee for the DC Grassroots Planning Coalition from 2017-2019. Professionally, David works as the Partnerships Manager at the DC Primary Care Association, and has 10 years of experience working on local social equity programs related to education, food, and health. David currently coordinates the DC PACT initiative, a cross-sector health coalition addressing the social determinants of health, which builds on his experience strengthening the capacity of the emergency food assistance network of the greater Washington, DC area at the Capital Area Food Bank, and his years of experience doing advocacy, outreach and education at City Year Washington, DC and as a Freedom School Servant-Leader Intern and Youth Advocate Leadership Trainer with the Children’s Defense Fund. David is further developing new DCPCA member capacity building initiatives related to health equity and the structural determinants of health. Prior to joining DCPCA, David completed a Master’s in Public Health at the University of Maryland, where he conducted research and policy analysis projects that detail the path to building an accountable health community in the District. David is a native of the Washington, DC area and is passionate about building an equitable and inclusive region.

Law Professor

Leslie G. Fields, Esq. brings more than 20 years of federal, state, local, and international environmental justice and environmental law and policy experience to the Sierra Club. Fields was appointed by President Obama to serve on the Board of Directors of the Mickey Leland Urban Air Toxics Research Center. She serves on the board of the Children's Environmental Health Network. She also serves on the board of Adeso African Solutions (formerly Horn Relief—an East African natural resources and development organization).  Fields teaches international environmental law as an adjunct law professor at Howard University School of Law. Leslie Fields is a graduate of Cornell University and the Georgetown University Law Center.
